Newsletter

This Week We Will Focus On:

Reading Comprehension Focus: Main Idea (continued this week)
Topic
The topic is the general subject of a paragraph or essay. Topics are simple and are described with just a word or a phrase.
Main Idea
The main idea is a complete sentence; it includes the topic and what the author wants to say about it. If the author states the main idea in his paragraph it is called a “topic sentence.”

Poetry:  We will be moving on to studying Poetry after completing Main Idea.

Homework:  Students should be reading 20-30 minutes daily.  Please check-in with your child to verify that they are checking just right books for their reading ability.

Math:  Fractions
  •  We are finishing up fractions this week.

  • Later this week, we will be moving onto Measurement and Line Plots.

  • Students should be working on their multiplication skills at home nightly.
    • Although we are currently learning about Fractions, please continue to work on multiplication/division math facts at home.  Multiplication must be practiced consistently in order to develop fluency. Master one fact at a time before moving on to the next fact. Research shows that students learn facts in this order: 1, 0, 10, 5, 2, 4, 8, 3, 6, 9, 7, 11, 12
    • Computer Program- I have enrolled each student in Reflex Math fluency program.  This program helps the students become more fluent in multiplication and division.
  • Use this link for online multiplication practice - Math is Fun
  • Multiplication Assessments - The students have been assessed on their multiplication skills.  These assessments are timed, but DO NOT go in the grade book.  Those assessments have been sent home for parents to view.  When the student have successfully passed a multiplication table, they advance to the next table.  If the student does not correctly answer each problem in the time allowed, the student stays at that multiplication table until they do.  Please help your child practice times tables nightly.

Science:  We will are finishing our study of  plants structures this week.  There will be an assessment on Friday.  The students will be able to use their science book for this assessment.

Holiday Store:  This week, Dec. 2nd-Dec. 6th, we will be hosting a Holiday Store for students! Flyers/envelopes went home before Thanksgiving break. The store will contain items ranging from .25 - $12, where students will be able to shop for gifts for loved ones! Please ensure that any money being sent to school is in the designated envelope or any other sealed envelope that clearly identifies your child's name, teacher/grade, money amount, and who they are allowed to shop for. Please label it "Holiday Store". Monday will be a preview day for all classes and shopping is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday with flex time opportunities if your child is out on their shopping day. Our class shops on Wednesday this week.
