Weekly Newsletter

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful start to the school year!  We spent this short time diving into our core subjects.  They are making good progress adjusting to being back in school.  I hope your child enjoys sharing with you what they are learning in class!  We have been gradually learning about the expectations of a third grade student.  As the weeks go on, I anticipate the students will have an increased ability to focus, follow directions, and  develop their speaking and listening skills.

This week I will continue to listen to each child read to determine their reading level establishing reading goals.  I hope to finish assessing the class by the end of next week or the following week.

This Week We Will Focus On:
    • Reading Comprehension Focus
      • Students will continue to learn the importance of visualizing while reading
      • Homework:  Students should be reading 20-30 minutes daily.  Please check-in with your child to verify that they are checking just right books for their reading ability.
Math: Multiplication/Division
  • Students are continuing to work with arrays and repeated addition by using skip-counting rows as a strategy for multiplication. Arrays become a cornerstone of this unit. Students use the language of multiplication as they understand what factors are and differentiate between the size of groups and the number of groups within a given context. In this unit, the factors 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 provide an entry point for moving into more difficult factors in later units.
  • Multiplication progression:
    • Students should focus on learning multiplication facts for 1, 2, 5 &10 during the first nine weeks.
  • We will be focusing understanding multiplication and learning through strategies versus memorization. (see multiplication videos on the post below)
  • Students have begun learning the foundations of division and connecting it to multiplication.
  • In order for student to become fluent in these skills, students should be working on their multiplication skills at home nightly.
Science: Chapter 1 - Students will be learning about the Scientific Method this week and conducting an experiment.  They will have a quiz on this method.  They will have a study guide go home on Monday.

Social Studies:
  • We are currently working on Science and will switch to Social Studies very soon.  Depending on our schedule, we may be able to start Geography this week.
Thursday Folders
  • Thursday folders will go home each Thursday (or Friday).  This folder will store graded work and parent information.  Please remove papers, sign and return.
Binder:
Students have received planner which is stored in their take home binders.  Please view the students nightly and initial it.
*** Please send in a water bottle daily.
